PHOTOSHOOT INTERVIEW
Who are you?
- I’m Melanie Mitchell.
What do you do?
- I’m an artist.
What have you been up to lately?
- Lots of practice. And work. And studying. And learning. There’s something so fulfilling
about progress to me, and I want to master all I can. Other than this, just pushing myself
to do things I’ve always wanted to do. This year I’ve been skydiving, ziplining, and solo
traveling out of the country to name a few. They’re usually something drastically
different than projects I work on, but they keep me inspired to face new challenges and
move my projects forward. We’ll see what’s next. Maybe learning French or martial arts.
What music have you been listening to?
- Such a mix of things. Lots of new artists but also the OGs that inspire me. Blends of
mostly pop, hip-hop, dance, and rock. Lady Gaga, Alice Glass, Chantal Goya, T.S.O.L.
Been really getting back into Queen lately too...‘The Millionaire Waltz’ is one of the best
songs of all time.
You have a unique style, what inspires it?
- I’ve never been shy to wear what I feel best in the moment. I just like clothes I think look
dope. Rather it be casual looks or theatrical/larger than life. Lady Gaga, ASAP Rocky,
Rihanna, Princess Diana, and Diana Ross are a few favorites that come to mind. They
made me look at fashion more as an art than just something we wear. It’s dope.
What’s something important you learned recently?
- I think just doing what you want is so important. It’s a true form of freedom. Because
some life events really are out of my control. So by pursuing whatever makes you feel
something helps keep you grounded.
What made you choose to do this photoshoot?
- I’ve been studying a lot of the early work of people I admire. It may not be their best
work, but it's always authentic and special to me. You can feel the passion. They have this
mindset of like, no matter what, I’m here and this is what I’ve decided to do. Now watch
me work to be the best.
I feel like that's me right now...The beginning era of just putting myself out there more,
staying true to myself and trusting the journey. And since photos can capture moments, I
wanted to capture this new era.
What inspires you to do what you do?
- I think I'm really just understanding how short life is. And I wanna make some timeless
stuff. Work that lasts. Not for fame, but impact. But while I’m here I want to take care of
my Mom, family, and friends.
Beyond this, mostly my younger self. That version of me believed in me when I didn’t
have any awards or skills to my name. Keeps me inspired to continue to make progress. I
wanna make her proud.
What upcoming projects are you working on?
- So many things. But I never like to say what exactly it is until it’s complete. That way if
something doesn’t go as planned, people aren’t expecting it. But things are coming in due
time. And it’ll definitely be worth the wait.
